Assata grew up in New York City where she experienced life in two group homes before leaving the system. From her experience in the system, she says she’s developed the: “perseverance, determination, and the ability to face life head-on, no matter what the issue is.” Through her essay “Riding the E-Train to Here,” she describes her journey from foster care to becoming a successful career woman and mother of a three-year-old daughter. She believes that foster children are not stunted people who are to be pitied, and encourages all children currently in the system to realize that “this experience does not define you. If you can make it in this system, the world is yours!!!”
